253 Flinders Ln, Melbourne VIC 3000
Open until 8:00pm
If ever there was a cafe in Melbourne where the great writers could be seen reading, writing, discussing the big issues, and drinking strong liqueurs, I reckon it would have to be The Journal Cafe on Flinders Lane.
Situated adjacent to the Melbourne City Library, this place exudes otherworldliness with its dark, moody ambiance. Classic timber furnishings and paneling paired with a classic elegance that would make this place at home up the Paris-end of Collins Street.
Everybody is catered for. Enjoy a short black over your Tolstoy. A latte while labouring over your thesis. A whisky while carving away at your first novel. The food menu is basic, for it's not at heart a foody place, but there's an inviting range of simple dishes that are perfect to nibble on as you get down to work.
We didn't spot any power outlets on our recent visit but there's free WiFi via the library connection (the waitress told us this, so it's a done thing). A great place to come fully charged and with a big writing session in mind. Or just bring your notepad and people-watch and let those ideas start flowing.
